  He raised his eyebrows, and his lips twitched with a smile. “I’m better.”

  They broke apart, but he kept her back pressed to the counter, his gaze locked on her face. “Well? Can I replace the schmuck who abandoned you?”

  “How about this, then?” He reached in his pocket and pulled out a small, black box.

  He nudged her legs apart and slid between them. He held her close. “Now can I see you without the dress on?”

  She laughed and used her body to push him back, as she hopped off the edge of the counter and stood again. She draped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeply. “We have a café to open.” The green plastic seemed to glint in the kitchen light. “Besides, I have to show off and brag.”
